Magic Hat Redux
For those of you unhappy with my opinion of Circus Boy, rest assured: I tried Widmer's Hefeweizen last night.
And I was underwhelmed.
It was bland. Not TOO bland; I mean, I'd drink it again for sure, but it definitely didn't have as much flavor as Circus Boy. Like Tom said, that may be because I don't know what a hefeweizen is "supposed" to taste like, but all the same, I think it's delicious.

Tom is a beer snob. Drink whatever you think tastes good. :)

I am a beer snob, but that is
I am a beer snob, but that is beside the point. I didn't say don't drink it, I said I don't like it. I think everyone should drink what tastes good, but I also think that people should know what they are drinking.
The main thing I wanted to get across is that Circus Boy is not what most people think of when they think Hefeweizen. At the very least it is an oddity in the style, but I would go so far as to say that Circus Boy isn't a Hefeweizen at all. High hopped wheat ales are just so new that a separate name hasn't been given to them yet, so they get lumped in with Hefeweizens.
Circus Boy is a relatively high profile beer since it is included in a lot of Magic Hat's samplers, and I don't want people forming their opinions on Hefeweizens based on a beer that isn't representative of the style.

If you want to try a real
If you want to try a real Hefeweizen, you should get something German. If you can find it, I have yet to try a better one than Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, which happens to be brewed at the oldest brewery in the world still running today. Paulaner Hefe-Weissbier and Ayinger Bräu Weisse are both very good as well. If you can't find those, Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse is much more available, and while not quite as good as the others, it is still a good representative of the style.
Lest I be accused of more snobbery, I don't think that a good Hefeweizen needs to be German to be any good, it's just that every American one I have tried has been pretty mediocre compared to the Germans ones I have had. That's not to say that the American versions aren't worth drinking, in fact I'm drinking one right now (Long Trail Hefeweizen), they just aren't anything special.

Honestly, I appreciate your snobbery. This time last year, I still pretty much stuck to Miller, Guinness, and Killian's, and now that I'm finally trying more new stuff, it's nice to get input from someone who's tried a lot more than I have.
And also, I guess I like high-hopped ales better than Hefeweizens.
