Am I the only one that actually puts stuff in my pockets? Honestly, is there any reasonable explanation for pockets to come sewn shut on suit coats and other nice clothes?

The pockets are sewn shut to keep them from sagging. A suit's only purpose is to look nice, it's focus isn't really practicality. When you add the fact that it is much much easier to open a sewn pocket than to sew an open pocket, it almost makes sense that they do it.
